In a statement released on Monday, Lerner said “I owe it to Villa to move on, and look for fresh, invigorated leadership, if in my heart I feel I can no longer do the job.”

The announcement comes after Aston Villa lost to Tottenham Hotspur on the last day of the Premier League season.

Their dismal performance led to fans chanting “We want our Villa back” underlining the challenge for his successors to rebuild the club.

Lerner bought the club for £60m and has invested £200m in his 8 years at the helm. A takeover by two American billionaires is said to be in the works but Lerner reportedly wants £250m for the club, which might be too much for potential buyers.
