While late-game sees players setting up bases all across different types of planets that have varying levels of difficulty, the home planet of Sylva, depicted as earth-like since it’s easy to find the few resources seen across all planets, players will be able to utilize a wide variety of ways to harvest power. As an Astroneer in the intergalactic Age of Discovery, it’s up to fans to discover not only new planets and resources, but which types of equipment will net them the most power.

The good news is that in Astroneer players have their pick of generators, wind turbines, and solar panels, with the slightly more complicated news being that they won’t be able to utilize all of them on certain planets. However, for the home base on Sylva there is plenty of daylight to power solar panels and occasional gusts of wind for turbines, so the only issue early on is finding them. Since Astroneer has such immersive crafting methods, this means that the more energy a piece of equipment produces, the more difficult it will be to build, such as taking up more bytes and materials. One of the best power-generating pieces of equipment in the game is the RTG, but it costs 12,500 bytes to build as well as some incredibly complicated components, so players will be better off working with the resources they’re first handed before worrying too much about getting access to infinite power right away.

Early game can be a bit of a struggle, with there only being a certain amount of resources such as malachite available on Sylva, hindering immediate use of large power stores such as the RTG, with most Astroneers left to forage for batteries and scout for things such as wind turbines and solar panels to use. Many players have crafted what they feel is the best approach to early game base power use, though this often comes with trial and error. However, in the beginning it’s highly recommended that players have a rotating array of equipment so that they can have their solar panels working during the day while keeping batteries of varying sizes on hand for nighttime excursions.

Once Astroneers have gathered enough bytes and starting resources such as plastic which can be found on any planet, it will become easier for them to establish an alternating setup that won’t require too much thought and fits each player’s style. There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to how a base should be set up, as long as each player is able to fulfill their duties as a proper Astroneer and explore the galaxy to find precious minerals and strange new planets. Though, it doesn’t hurt to put everything in neat little rows, since a tidy home base is a happy home base.

Astroneer is available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
