Fortunately, obtaining alloy in Atlas is a straightforward task, and it simply requires players to obtain the Metallurgy skill in the Construction & Mercantilism skill tree. Unlocking the Metallurgy skill requires two skill points, and players must obtain the Secrets of Building and Chemicals & Tanning skills within the same tree as well.
With the Metallurgy skill unlocked, players can build a forge, which allows them to craft a number of ingots, including cobalt, copper, iron, and more. All of these ingots constitute an alloy, and any of them can be used to fulfill the alloy requirements for crafting cannons.
Making the ingots themselves requires a number of materials. Specifically, players will need to extract metal ores from the veins that can be found throughout Atlas’s map. As stated, any ore will be suitable for players working to build a cannon, and the ores melt down to ingots of the same type.
Additionally, the smelting process needs other consumables. Some of the easiest ingots to craft require coal, which can be obtained by burning wood, and the salt that can be dug up from Atlas’s sandy beaches.
As long as players are willing to invest points into the requisite skills, and are able to spend time farming the necessary materials, there should be no problem obtaining alloy in Atlas. However, crafting a cannon does require 28 alloy, so it is not entirely trivial to make one.
While there has been a bit of controversy surrounding Atlas’s launch, with some player’s suggesting it is merely a reskin of Ark: Survival Evolved, the game is still drawing attention. With players now crafting ships and collecting the alloy needed to weaponize them, Atlas’s gameplay continues to distinguish itself from the previous MMO, and time will tell if it is enough to keep players engaged.
Atlas is currently in early access on PC.
